Health and safety probe after ‘several concerns’ raised over redevelopment of Sandbanks Care Home in Littlestone into flats

Inspectors are set to visit a development of new flats after being alerted several times to “concerns about health and safety”.

The work is taking place at the former Sandbanks Care Home in Coast Road, Littlestone, on Romney Marsh.

Plans first approved five years ago paved the way for the construction of 19 one- and two-bed flats at the site, which was sold to Sandbanks Development Ltd last year.

Work has been ongoing since 2024 – but after neighbours flagged concerns last month, the Health and Safety Executive (HSE) has confirmed it is investigating.

A spokesperson said: “We have received several concerns about health and safety at the site of the former Sandbanks Care Home. As a result of those concerns, our inspectors will be visiting the site to make further enquiries.”

Police say they were also called on February 26 after receiving a “call from a partner agency following concerns regarding a business property”.

A police spokesperson said: “Officers attended the property and lodged a report with the relevant health and safety organisation. No offences were identified.”

live.yourmetropolitan.comhas attempted to contact Sandbanks Development with three emails and two phone calls over the past two weeks but has not received a response.

The original planning permission was granted in 2021 following an application by Leo Griggs on behalf of Livingstone Homes.

Littlestone Property Development Ltd has submitted further applications for the discharge of conditions during the project.

However, according to the Land Registry, the plot was sold for £1,650,000 in March 2025 to Sandbanks Development, which last month submitted a new application to alter the approved plans.

It seeks to amend the roof height as well as add dormer windows and solar panels.

A bin store will also be relocated and a water tank storage unit will be added to the site.

But 26 objections have been lodged, with no comments in support.

Paula James commented: “I strongly object to the raising of the roof, which will make the building look overbearing and completely out of place with the existing houses.

“The community already lacks school placements, and struggles to get doctor and dentist appointments.

“Adding more potential residents will make this struggle worse as well as add extra traffic and pollution.”
