A Place in the Sun buyers’ unfortunate discovery cuts viewing short

Potential buyers on A Place in the Sun were forced to stop their property search immediately after spotting a significant problem.

Channel 4’s Jean Johansson encountered an “issue” when Wiltshire couple Nat and Dave discovered a snag while hunting for their dream holiday home on Lanzarote.

With a budget of £160,000, the pair hoped to find their perfect property. Having visited Lanzarote several times annually over the past ten years, they were determined to make their lifelong ambition of owning a holiday retreat a reality – somewhere family and friends could visit.

The couple told Jean they were after a one-bedroom flat with outdoor space, ideally within a 15-minute stroll of the beach. Jean showed them five different properties, hoping to help them find exactly what they were looking for.

The pair were taken with the interior of the first flat in Puerto del Carmen’s heart. The contemporary open-plan living and dining space impressed them, as did the two bedrooms available, reports the Liverpool Echo.

Nat remarked: “Overall the inside is beautiful.” Yet both agreed the location wasn’t suitable. Situated above an Irish pub in a bustling neighbourhood, the buyers felt it was “not quite what we imagined.”

Jean was disheartened by their response and was determined to make amends with her second viewing. She brought Dave and Nat to a more tranquil spot in Costa Teguise.

Dave and Nat were instantly smitten with the second apartment, falling for its pool, stunning sea views, and generous outdoor space. The open-plan layout left them feeling the property was light and roomy, prompting Nat to declare: “This is the dream.”

Gazing out at what she described as the “perfect” ocean vista, she continued: “I can just see myself sitting there on a little bench with a glass of wine looking at the sea.”

With such a strong contender already found, Jean’s remaining options struggled to make an impression. The couple travelled to Playa Blanca to view a third property, only to cut the visit short after encountering a significant problem.

The doorway leading to the outside area was simply too low for Dave to pass through without stooping, prompting Jean to warn: “Mind your head”, to which Dave responded: “This is going to be an issue.” He further noted: “And for our son who is six foot eight.”

Nat was equally unimpressed, saying: “It’s a bit too cramped, there are lots of long legs in our family.” When Jean asked whether they wished to carry on looking around, Dave replied: “I think we should probably move on.”

Jean’s fourth property fared no better, with the couple finding it felt “too residential”, while the fifth was swiftly ruled out after Nat took issue with the “poor upkeep of the complex”.

Ultimately, the pair set their hearts on the second apartment in Costa Teguise, and after lengthy negotiations, they finally secured their ideal holiday retreat for £141,300.

All episodes of A Place in the Sun are available to stream on Channel 4’s catch up service.
